The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is a joint with a disc located just in the front of the ear. It is the most used joint in the body. You use your TMJ when you chew, swallow, talk and yawn. You may hear a clicking, crunching or grinding sound when using your jaw. You may even bite the inside of your mouth when eating. These are some of the indications of a TMJ problem. Many symptoms may be caused by TMJ dysfunction. Symptoms you may notice are pain in your jaw, face, neck, ear or head. You may have headaches, even migraines. You may feel dizzy; have ringing in the ears, decreased hearing or a sensation of pressure or fullness in the ears.
TMJ pain may be caused by stress, a whiplash injury, a fall, tooth loss, surgery and dental work. Up to 78% of Americans may have TMJ problems. The TMJ joint may become misaligned. Misaligned joints in the neck may also contribute to TMJ pain. Additionally, the 68 pairs of muscles that surround the TMJ must function properly to allow painless motion of your TMJ.
We are chiropractic physicians trained to restore function and health to the joints, nerves and muscles. With an examination to determine the cause of your TMJ pain, they can provide chiropractic adjustments to realign the joints causing the dysfunction. Myofascial therapy and cold laser treatment could help relieve the neuromusculoskeletal pain.
J. Vaughn, Licensed Massage Therapist (LMT) works closely with the doctors. He can provide the deep muscle work needed to treat the 68 pairs of muscles that contribute to this complex and painful condition.
